Ascites
Ascites is a condition characterized by the accumulation of fluid in the abdominal cavity. This can cause the abdomen to appear firm and tight, like a drum. In Chinese medicine, ascites is associated with disruptions to the body's fluid metabolism, which can be caused by either obstruction of fluid movement by a pathogenic factor or weakness of the organs responsible for regulating fluid metabolism. Treatment for ascites typically involves a combination of tonification, fluid drainage, and removal of excess pathogens. Symptoms of ascites may include swelling of the abdomen, a sallow or yellow complexion, emaciation, jaundice, and the appearance of blue veins across the abdomen.
